target formation - The underground hydrocarbon-bearing rock that the driller seeks and has applied for permits to drill into.  Formations in NYS which have been the target of natural gas drilling operations include the Herkimer, Trenton-Black River, and others.  Formations differ in their depth and type of rock or composition; therefore, drillers use different techniques to extract the gas, depending on the properties of the target formation.
